Enriching & Enhancing

The Capital Foundation grants have helped to secure special equipment, while others have been used to implement innovative projects which emphasize new teaching approaches for their students. It is the Foundation's desire to help enhance the learning opportunities for the students at Broughton High School. Your ongoing support will ensure a commitment to elevate the overall enrichment and experiences beyond the classroom.

During the 2021-2022 academic year the Foundation awarded approximately $29,024 to 27 grant recipients to implement their grant proposals. By making a tax-deductible gift to the Broughton Capital Foundation, you are supporting education in the following ways:

Arts

Artist-In-Residence

“The Capital Foundation at Broughton High School creates opportunities that are unparalleled.”

“The financial support they provide to the dance department in order to host world renowned dance artists is one that elevates the student's ability and knowledge and the program's overall growth and success. Dancers are able to take part in real world experiences through choreography and performance while diving deeper into their understanding of the dance community beyond the walls of Broughton. These artists bring rigor, passion, relevance and experience that inspires and challenges the students. There is nothing like the experience of an Artist in Residence. I am forever grateful for the dedication the Capital Foundation continues to demonstrate to all the students and programming at Broughton. It ensures that we continue to be a school of Excellence!”

— BETSY GRAVES, DANCE DIRECTOR

Mathematics

“As a department chair, the Capital Foundation has provided funding for software that has benefited my entire department.”

“The Capital Foundation has allowed me to provide resources, materials, and programs for remediation and enrichment to my Math 1 classes, most of which are co-taught with a Special Education teacher. These programs provide pre-screening tools that help us diagnose prerequisite skills that have not yet been mastered, customizing a learning protocol for each student. Closing this achievement gap in math plays a large role in students graduating on time. As a department chair, the Capital Foundation has provided funding for software that has benefited my entire department. These digital tools were an essential part of our success during remote learning. We are very fortunate to have an organization that supports teachers and removes the barriers that many schools face when finding resources that may not be funded by the district.”

— JODIE KINCAID, MATHEMATICS TEACHER

Science

"The Capital Foundation grants have enabled my students…

…to perform PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and sequence the DNA of store-bought fish. They were able to detect imposter fish species being sold in North Carolina."

— EDWIN DAVIS, FORENSICS SCIENCE TEACHER

World Languages

"Thank you to the Broughton Capital Foundation for supplying mini whiteboards and erasers for my students.

As a Spanish PLT, we have planned many activities centered around the use of mini whiteboards. They help increase student engagement and give me immediate feedback on assessing student understanding. I am a beginning teacher and have seen the students benefit from having their own mini whiteboard during class."

— VALERIE DARATONY, SPANISH TEACHER

Career & Technical Education

“I feel very lucky to have such a supportive organization helping our students be the best they can be!"

"The Capital Foundation has been such a help to me over the past two decades in Broughton's video production studio. The foundation purchased our first set of teleprompters for our daily newscast. The first year our school offered the high level IB Film course, the foundation funded a small amount of money for each student group to spend making their film production that year. It's paid for accessories that the school system would not, and, recently, a research book for IB Film students to use. I feel very lucky to have such a supportive organization helping our students be the best they can be!"

— BRIAN MARTIN, VIDEO PRODUCTION & IB FILM TEACHER
2021-2022 JENRETTE AWARD WINNER

School-Wide

WebAssign & Writer-In-Residence Program

WebAssign, a project funded yearly by the Capital Foundation is an online assessment and assignment system used by math and science teachers as a crucial aspect to their instruction and practice.  During the 2021-2022 school year, WebAssign was used by 17 teachers and 1500 students.

The Capital Foundation provides funds to continue the Nancy B. Elliott Writer-in-Residence program. Broughton English teacher Nancy Elliott was the inspiration behind this program, which guides students through the process of writing the personal essay for their college applications. The grant provides $3000 for a professional writer to provide individual sessions with seniors in the preparation of their personal essay for their college applications.

“WebAssign offers a great opportunity for me to assess my students on material outside of class.”

“WebAssign offers a great opportunity for me to assess my students on material outside of class. The questions have different numerical values so the students can collaborate on the problem-solving process but do not get the same answers.”

— ALLISEN FISCHER, MATH TEACHER

“In AP Biology and Honors Biology, WebAssign questions have many diagrams, tables and graphs that my students need to be exposed to for their success taking the AP Biology exam and the biology EOC.  WebAssign offers different ways for my students to learn and interact with the material providing another way for my students to succeed.”

— LAURA WOODS, SCIENCE TEACHER

“WebAssign was invented by members of the NC State Physics Department with the intention of helping students develop skills in solving physics problems. It provides an opportunity for students to try solving problems, get immediate feedback as to whether they are correct or not, learn from any mistakes they may have made and then allow additional opportunities to solve them correctly.”

— DAVE CORSETTI, SCIENCE TEACHER

“The tutoring has helped me tremendously, because before it I had no idea how to formulate an idea for the college essay.”

"This program helped me improve my common application essay because it had a non-family member look over and give me advice allowing me to make edits that overall polished my essay. It helped to reduce the stress of senior year."

— MADELINE MEYER, CLASS OF 2023

"The tutoring has helped me tremendously, because  before it I had no idea how to formulate an idea for the college essay. Without it I don’t know where I would have started.”

— BRYSON GAULEY, CLASS OF 2023

Media Center

“The books purchased this year through the Capital Foundation Grant have had a profound effect on our students.”

Auditorium

The Diane Payne Auditorium at Broughton High School has long been the center of activities for the Broughton community since 1929.  It has hosted thousands of beautiful arts performances including, Band, Orchestra, Choir, Dance, and Theater; it also serves as an important meeting space for student groups, new student orientations, PTSA meetings and special ceremonies like the Awards Assembly, National Honor Society Inductions, Retirement Celebration, and the Candlelight Service.  The auditorium has also played host to numerous dignitaries including Presidents, politicians, nationally renowned artists such as Golden Globe Winner Ariana DeBose, and most memorably, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Broughton PTSA, Capital Foundation and Broughton High School collaborated to help bring life back into our beautiful auditorium."

“The Diane Payne Auditorium has served every facet of our school community and beyond but was in desperate need of some care and attention.  The Broughton PTSA, Capital Foundation and Broughton High School collaborated to help bring life back into our beautiful auditorium, starting with new carpet!  The total cost of the project was $20,000.  With contributions from Broughton High School, Broughton PTSA, and the Capital Foundation we were able to make it happen.

The new carpet was installed in the auditorium and the two adjacent classrooms during the summer of 2022 and looks amazing!! By coming together and pooling resources with the Capital Foundation, the Broughton community once again enjoys the opportunity to perform, meet, and socialize in this special space – a space that will continue to serve our community for many years to come!”

— AMY MERRIMAN, FORMER BROUGHTON PTSA PRESIDENT
